What is a tankless water heater?

Tankless water heaters heat water only when there is a need.  This is why the are often referred to as "on-demand" water heaters.  Because you are only using energy when hot water is being used, a tankless system will typically use less gas and help lower your energy bills.  A quality system will provide you with endless hot water when you need it.  Tankless systems have been used for decades in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Europe, where they have become the norm.  It has only been in the last few years that tankless has really taken off in the United States.  Tankless systems are smaller than traditional tanks and usually are mounted on a wall.  Another huge advantage is life-expectancy.  Tankless systems can last up to 20 years vs the 8-10 year life of a traditional tank.

Why does D'Angelo's prefer Navien Tankless systems?

While it is true that we have the knowledge and expertise to service all makes and model, we prefer to install the Navien brand of tankless water heaters.  We have chosen this high-quality brand because we feel it offers the best combination of quality, reliability and value.  Navien is recognized as a market leader and offers a full line of products to meet any of our customer's needs.  Better still,  our technicians have been factory-trained and certified in this line.  We even carry a full parts kit on our trucks to be prepared to help in the event of a problem.

Navien sets itself apart from the competition by offering some pretty unique features.  The Advanced-Series of tankless water heaters incorporate a built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump to provide hot water more quickly.  A common complaint from customers about tankless systems is that it takes too long to get hot water.  These features from Navien greatly reduce wait times.  Navien systems also vent in PVC which allow for much greater installation flexibility.  Finally, Navien has designed a dual-heat exchanger that allow for up to 98% efficiency.  This means you get endless hot water for less.

Why should I choose to go Tankless?

We love tankless water heaters!  We think they are pretty awesome and most of our customers love them, but they are not right for every situation. There are pros and cons with tankless water heaters.  There are several key factors you must consider when deciding to go tankless.  These factors include: Cost (initial investment), water needs/usage, and install environment (i.e. Can the system be installed in the home properly).

Let's get this out of the way first: Tankless systems are expensive, usually costing about 4 to 5 times more than a traditional tank.  This initial investment can pay itself back with energy savings but it takes a long time, often 15 years or more.  A premium tankless system like the Navien is designed to last 20 years or so.  This means a tankless can be the right choice if you plan on being in your home for long period of time.

A second important factor has to do with your hot water needs and planned usage.  One of the best things about tankless is that it supplies endless hot water when needed.  For families with high water demands, a tankless can keep the water hot all day.  Imagine not having to worry about being the last one in the shower or having to wait for the water to "heat-up" again.  This added connivence can make the investment worth it from day one!  Tankless can be a great choice for homes with little hot water demand too.  This is because tankless heaters only use energy when water is flowing versus a standard tank that heats water all-day-long even when it is not needed.  This can translate into energy saving and being more "green".

An often overlooked factor has to do with the actual installation of a new system.   These units require a "perfect" installation to be able to function to their fullest potential.  This is where D'Angelo's really shines.  Most tankless water heaters need to vent directly to the outside of the home and not up a chimney.  This means there must be a place to properly vent the unit.  Some homes do not have this space available and may not allow a system to be installed.  Additionally these systems really work best on municipal water supply and not with well systems.  This is because there needs to be continuous pressure and flow and with most wells the pressure fluctuates greatly.  We would recommend an in-home consultation for all of our customers that want a tankless water heater to ensure the best fit for each of our customers.
